Joseph is here. Basil is gone.

June 12, 2007

First, so I can get this out of the way: we had to put Basil our dog to sleep. One of the hardest things i’ve done and it is really hard on our family, much harder than i imagined. It is especially hard since they are out of town and i was left with the hard decsions and the final decision. I’m glad it was me and not them though. Perhaps there is some grace in them not having to go through it directly. Not really sure. Just wondering. He was our favorite. (Please don’t tell the other dogs.) He was my favorite by far. He was a soulful, playful dog that routinely kept the peace between the other two. So now we’re left to figure out without his help the ADHD dog vs the Old-maid dog.

Joseph is here from Guatemala. He is a young, Vineyard pastor who is considering moving to Cincy for a couple years of learning before launching an hispanic church plant in either Guatemala or Cincinnati. If you’re in the area or can make occasion to be in the area please stop by. He’ll be here for another 10 days or so.

Last night we played cornhole in front of the church building. Good times! It struck how little we (me, VC) plays in public space and how important that could be for us missionally in this neighborhood. It’s definitely a lack in our neighborhood and my hunch is in many other urban neighborhoods. It is something we can offer our neighbors as an act of love. Play builds community. What a deal! Fun, builds community, connects to neighbors, serves the ‘hood… what a kingdom deal!

sounds joyous! block parties celebrating the Kingdom…with a game of street soccer followed by some homebrew (the monastic-kind)…

the church needs to have more blow-the-doors-off-into-the-streets parties…it’s a sign of the kingdom, y’know

    peace

I could not agree more! I play Corn Hole in our front yard every time we play for that very reason…and of course it is a shorter distance to carry the game from the garage, heh. hey man I will be back in town next week…see if you can set up a meeting @ the Apple store and we will go.. I am open almost any day..so just call me when you get it done…

I was sitting at a pub on MainStrasse last night thinking almost the same thing. The corner was alive in a way I’d like to see our neigborhood bloom. What say you to playtime on the piazza on a regular basis? Or even just considering it an extention of our porches? Oh, there I go again, dreaming out loud…..

From one dog lover to another, I am sad for Basil. He will be missed.

On more profound notes, your community is an expression of the Kingdom!!

    peace

I’m sorry to hear about Basil. That’s really tough.

By the way, what is corn hole?

Losing a dog is ALWAYS hard. Can’t imagine not having our beast around forever. By the way, I know there is The Gospel According to the Simpsons and The Gospel According to Starbucks, etc, but I don’t think there’s anything out there on The Gospel According to Corn Hole. That would make an interesting DMIN dissertation project if you feel stuck with what you and Carter are cooking up. Something to ponder…
