A machine, a cow, and a cherished pet…

September 3, 2007

I was thinking about my business a few days ago and this thought popped into my head about three different ways of viewing a business. It can be seen as a machine that has no personality and is little cared for other than the raw results it produces. It can be easily discarded or replaced. A cow however is more than a machine to a farmer. It is an important producer of milk, cheese, and butter but it also has capacity to develop a bond with the farmer. But it isn’t sacred. That means if needed it can be sacrificed and turned into burger or steak. A cherished pet is another story. We develop deep bonds with our pets. Some people even dress them up in outfits that match theirs. Our identity can even get wrapped up in a pet if we get super attached to it. Pets are not killed for food but over time become cherished memebers of our family.

For me, business is a cow. It is not the most important thing in my life. It is a producer that I have a bond with and care about but if necessary it can be turned into steak. These are important distinctions to me and i needed to write them to remember them. Thanks for reading. Here’s to some good milk and the hopes of steak!
